I’ve put together a collection of gifts for writers. Each image is an Amazon affiliate link, so if you do click through and buy, I will receive a small percentage. In any case, a heartfelt thank you to all of my readers and clients for your support. This past year brought many changes as I transitioned into full-time freelancing. Look for a leaner, meaner, and more informative Word Bank Writing & Editing in 2016!
Beverage Related Gifts for Writers
Wine and coffee function as the sweet nectar of life that keeps many a writer going. Nothing says I adore you more than hurling Shakespearean insults. Or if accessorizing wine glasses is your thing, go for the Bronte sister charms.
Literary Quote T-Shirts
I’m sure you could have a T-shirt with your favorite hashtag, but for your purposes, #writer says it best. I must add that it would be nice if more T-shirts feature quotes from women writers could be found! So pick the quote that best suits the writer in your life:
- “Find what you love and let it kill you.” –Charles Bukowski
- “Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.” –Kurt Vonnegut
- “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” –F. Scott Fitzgerald
- “To thine own self be true.” –William Shakespeare
Jewelry for Writers
Bring on the bling! Earrings, necklaces, charm bracelets, oh my! Alas, if you’re like me and not one to wear jewelry, maybe you could consider getting or giving literary tattoo for the most permanent of gifts.
Games for Writing Inpiration
Rather than letting the frustration of writer’s block set in, games can transport a writer’s mind back to that sense of play necessary for writing engaging prose. I’ve spent many hours fiddling with magnetic poetry to jog my stuck brain.
Books: The Best Gifts for Writers!
Last but not least, books always make for great gifts. Featured below is a selection of books from my clients. If you’re going to be in need of some editing in the year ahead, please explore my editing services page. I am continually amazed by the great stories that come my way.
What gifts for writers have you given or received?

I didn’t wait for December and treated myself to the Shakespeare insult mugs AND some POE mugs before Thanksgiving when I got a new coffee maker. Love, love, love drinking my dark roast coffee in my new mugs.
Do the make my writing better? Not sure, but the coffee sure fuels my determination to finish the first draft before the end of the year. (Hit page 295 yesterday in my caffeinated haze.)
Candy, I’m jealous. A new coffee maker. I need to put that on my wishlist. Congrats on hitting page 295 in your draft. Yay for the power of caffeine.
Hello Jeri
It is great to see that you have prepared a long list of gifts for the writers. I hope that many will be benefited.
Thank you for sharing.
Ana, online shopping is ever so much more fun than going from store to store. I bet a lot of writers would agree 😉
Great list of gifts for writers. I like the games and the word nerd charm. I found a t-shirt once that said “Be careful or you’ll end up in my novel.”
Donna, I think I might order The Writer’s Toolbox. I’m a bit of a prompt junkie 😉
Really great gift ideas for the holidays.
I wanted to put out my own line of t-shirts for authors. They would say, “I’m an author and my only royalties were this lousy t-shirt”
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Bill, now that’s an inspiring quote for a T-shirt and a reality authors definitely know all too well.
These are so great! Perfect post idea, too.
Laura, thanks Laura. I should have added Shakespearean Insult gum as well. Your random gift from a while back is still sitting on my desk.
Great idea and I am loving the T shirts, in particular…. Oh, and Being here, I wanted to let you know that my RoundTeam feed seems not to be working very properly… I will be reseting it as your tweets are not always sent to my feed, and when they do, just a few ones show up ? Annoying!…
All my best wishes, dear Jeri, Aquileana ?
Aqui, I’m a big fan of the T-shirts as well. I used to collect shirts related to the places I traveled, but now that I am not traveling as much, I’m making it my mission to collection shirts related to books and Broadway musicals. Hanks for letting me know about your RoundTeam feed. All the best wishes to you as well 🙂
I bought the banned book mug for my wife who is a freelance travel writer.
Ken, I hope your wife enjoys the banned books mug. I have a similar long-sleeved shirt that I got at the Library of Congress when I was in Washington, DC. That’s great to hear too that she’s a freelance travel writer.
Great collection of gifts Jeri. And I have the banned book mug!! Thanks for putting this together. Hope you have a great holiday season:-)
Kathy, the banned books mug is definitely neat. The design could make for a neat tattoo as well, but I’m rather obsessed with literary tattoo ideas right now.
Jeri – I love the wineglass beverage charms – they’re so cute and different. I also like the Moon Library Necklace. It must have taken you quite some time to come up with this great list of gifts – they`re so unique and perfect for the writer – or for bloggers.
Lenie, the list took about as long as most blog posts do to compile, but it was hard to choose which ones to put in this post. It was a great way to combine my own shopping with a weekly post 😉
Wow that must have taken you some time Jeri! Great selection. Personally, all this writer wants for Christmas is a new computer but I think I’ll have to end up getting myself that little gift. 🙂
Marquita, I would put new iPad on my writer’s wants list, but that’s not gonna happen. Guess I’ll console myself with some T-shirts instead.
Oh I love these, especially the writing games! But truth be told, I would more likely use a mug for my coffee while I’m writing. 😉 Great gift ideas!
Meredith, what I miss most is the collection of magnetic poetry I used to keep on the filing cabinet by my desk when I used to be in the classroom. It was a great stress reliver after a long day. Alas, students kept making naughty poems out of the word tiles, so I brought it home to put on my fridge.
Hi Jeri,
Love this fun post! All the gift ideas are fabulous. I love new style coffee mugs though I don’t drink coffee, I use them for my tea but this time I would love a T shirt with my own poetry…just two lines but they don’t come to my mind right now…may be from Eternal Love or Unknown Love…
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful idea! Happy Holidays!
Balroop, a T-shirt featuring a quote from your own writing is a great idea.
Love the list! Those T-Shirts are a cute idea. I love the one that says, “I’m a writer. What’s your superpower?” I should get a German one made.
My mom gave me a Shakespeare mug and Shakespeare insult magnets. I’ve also received an Antique Typewriter Key Bracelet – https://www.etsy.com/shop/KeysAndMemories and https://www.etsy.com/shop/JoySparksDesigns. I don’t know if I received mine from these sites, but I thought I’d share in case you are interested.
Wishing you an awesome and successful 2016!
Denise, thanks for the links. The idea of Shakespearean insult magnets are definitely something I would go for.
Great list, Jeri! I love the quote t-shirts. I gave my son a t-shirt a few years ago that read “Let’s eat Grandmom. Let’s eat, Grandmom. Comma saves lives.” I loved it because I am always telling them it’s OK to use commas in their writing. Not to much of course, but enough to help the story read better. They never use them. Thanks for sharing this gift list.
Sabrina, bless you for encouraging your children to use commas! When I was a teacher, I dreaded giving lessons on commas since their use largely comes down to stylistic choices. I’m more fond of them than not because pauses that are so often needed are not added to writing.
Terrific list of gifts for writers Jeri. I love the quote on t-shirt idea. What’s perfect about that is it can be so individualized too.
Patricia, I’ve looked into personalized T-shirts before but haven’t taken the plunge. I really should because I collect quotes like they’re going out of style 😉
What a good selection of gifts for writers. Pity I don’t have any writers that are close to me:-)
Catarina, a Shakespearean insult mug would work for most anyone, especially someone who may have rubbed you the wrong way…
Ah, I have to still get a gift for my husband who is a playwright, so this is great. I love the little necklace that says Word Nerd. The next time I need a gift for a female writer in my life, that will be it! And of course, the Mad Libs. In my opinion, you can never go wrong with Madlibs!
Ercia, I am totally with you on Madlibs. They never get old.
I saw a list that included fingerless gloves. That inspired me to go buy some dollar store gloves and make my own. Considering my office is in the garage, I kind of need them… 🙂
Loni, do you use a space heater when you have to type in your garage this time of year? Brrrrr….
Jeri, I have received alot of lovely journals and books on writing from family members. One book I was given was the book Stephen kings on writing. It was excellent. I have given journals to friends who like to journal to. I love the jewelry idea. 🙂
Crystal, books on writing make great gifts too. Maybe next year I will include that category.
Jeri — Fun idea to suggest gifts that related to writers. No pens or pencils for us scribes?
Jeannette, the writing utensil scene on Amazon wasn’t too hot, but giving personalized pens or pencils is also a great idea.
Loved the coffee mug Hyperbole, so I just had to get it. Too bad some of the tee shirts are already out of stock! But I’ll check back. Merry Christmas…thanks for haring this great list.
Jacquie, go figure on the T-shirt shortage. I really want the Bukowski one. Merry Christmas to you as well 🙂
I loved the banned books mug. And Shakespeare insults sounds cool. I enjoyed looking at the books your clients have written. It’s nice to have lists with recommendations – shopping can be intimidating.
Leora, I’m with you on shopping being intimidating. Or perhaps I should use the word torture…
What a thoughtful gift for all your followers! Thanks – I’m asking for the book worm earrings.
Jan, I’ll have to go for a necklace since I don’t have pierced ears.
Thanks for these great ideas Jeri. 🙂
DG, thanks. I’m feeling the need for a new set of magnetic poetry myself.
I loved looking through these and would go for a Vonnegut t-shirt if I weren’t stocked to the brim with those and if it said “So it goes.” I know that’s his big quote but it still resonates with me. Honestly, I’d never thought about getting a literary game. Maybe I’ll have to nudge my wife on this, huh?
Thanks for sharing, Jeri.
I love that Vonnegut quote as well. I just got done listening to the new audible version of Slaugtherhouse Five that’s narrated by James Franco. It was really good. I plan to actually get “So it goes” as a tattoo one of these days.
Hi Jeri,
Let me say first and foremost, I’m so glad I found your blog.
I found you through Diana Marinova. She recently published a post on freelance blogs to follow and yours was one of them.
Nice to meet you. 🙂
Well, I guess I’m a little late to the party on this post, aren’t I? I suppose some of these gifts could be good on Valentine’s Day too, right? LOL
I mean, I know I personally can never have too many coffee mugs.
And I love to read, although I wish I had time to read a little more these days.
I’ve been freelancing full-time since 2014. Actually, I started blogging around the same time, but it was only this week that I relaunched and re-branded my blog to focus solely on helping other freelancers.
I’ll be putting together an expert roundup of successful freelancers in the next couple months, and I’d love to have you participate.
Hope you’re having an awesome day,
Brent
Brent, thanks for stopping by. I count Diana high on my list of fellow freelancers who inspire me to do better in my own work. Feel free to contact me about your roundup of freelancers. I’m heading over to check out your blog later today.
